Archdiocese of Freetown Celebrates Feast of St. Edward the Confessor

Freetown, Sierra Leone – October 13, 2024

The Archdiocese of Freetown marked the Feast of St. Edward the Confessor on Sunday, hosting a Mass at St. Edward’s School Grounds in Kingtom.

This year’s theme was “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

The Mass commenced at 11 a.m., drawing participation from all parishes, quasi-parishes, and chaplaincies in the archdiocese. Rev. Fr. Dr. Joseph Tamba Kamanda served as the Chief Celebrant in the absence of Archbishop Edward Tamba Charles, who is currently attending the synod in Rome.

The liturgy included a series of readings: the first reading from Wisdom 7:7-11, followed by the Responsorial Psalm (Psalm 90:12-17, R. cf. 14). The Gospel reading was taken from Mark 10:17-30. Mr. Massaquoi from St. Paul’s Quasi Parish read the first reading while Mary Kobba from St. Francis Xavier Parish did the second reading, and Francis Bassie from St. Edward’s Parish server as the announcer.

This celebration honored St. Edward the Confessor, who ruled England from 1003 to 1066 as a benevolent and pious leader. Known for his commitment to serving the poor and promoting social change, he is credited with the construction of numerous churches, including London’s Westminster Abbey. St. Edward is also remembered for his miraculous healing touch, believed to have cured many both before and after his death.

St. Edward is the Patron Saint of St. Edward’s Parish and St. Edward’s Primary and Secondary Schools, as well as the Archdiocese of Freetown.

During the celebration, participants prayed for unity and communion, emphasizing the vital role of community in the Christian faith.

As attendees reflected on the challenges of living as Christians today, they were reminded of Christ’s call to community and the necessity of supporting one another in the Church’s mission.
