Holy Spirit Chaplaincy Hosts Annual Cathedraticum Mass with Most Rev. Dr Edward Tamba Charles

Newman Centre, Freetown – 28 May 2025

The Metropolitan Archbishop of Freetown, Most Rev. Dr Edward Tamba Charles, presided over the annual Cathedraticum Mass on Wednesday evening at the Holy Spirit Catholic Chaplaincy, located on the Goderich Campus of Milton Margai Technical University.

The solemn liturgical celebration, which began at 5:00 pm, brought together all priests serving within the Juba Deanery. The deanery includes Our Lady Star of the Sea Parish, Blessed Michael Tansi Parish, St John XXIII Parish, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Quasi Parish, St Columba’s Catholic Community, and the Holy Spirit Chaplaincy.

The Cathedraticum Mass is a longstanding diocesan tradition where parishes offer a symbolic financial contribution to the bishop. This gesture signifies unity and shared responsibility in supporting the wider mission of the Church. The word cathedraticum is derived from the Latin cathedra, meaning “bishop’s seat.”

While the event is not a competition, Our Lady Star of the Sea Parish notably led in financial contributions. Alongside monetary offerings, several food items, drinks and toiletries were also presented as gifts.

The liturgy unfolded in five parts: the Introductory Rites, the Liturgy of the Word, the Liturgy of the Eucharist, the Communion Rite, and the Concluding Rites.

Scripture readings included a passage from the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 17:15, 22–18:1), Psalm 148 as the Responsorial Psalm, a reading from the Book of Revelation (Revelation 21:1–5a), and the Gospel according to John (John 16:12–15).

The gathering underscored the spiritual unity and pastoral vitality of the Juba Deanery, reaffirming its dedication to the leadership and mission of the Archdiocese of Freetown.

The voices of the St. Cecilia Choir from Our Lady Star of the Sea Parish contributed significantly to the success of the event, uplifting the liturgy with solemn and joyful music.

Archbishop Edward Tamba Charles expressed his happiness at the turnout and participation, commending the unity and generosity shown by the deanery’s faithful.
